Abstract: Grade retention, the practice of requiring students to repeat their current grade level the next year, is a popular method of disciplining poor academic performance. This association has been implicated with determining massively important outcomes further in students’ lives. The goal of this analysis is primarily to examine the association between grade retention and students’ outlook on life, where outlook includes both students’ view of their lives at the time of the study as well as their futures. This analysis will investigate a possible correlation between the number of times students repeated one or more grades, and how that predicts outlook. Furthermore, the students’ opinion of their relationship with their parents will be considered in relation to grade retention and its association with student outlook.
