The study has analyzed the association between an individual’s level of worry about their financial situation and their likelihood to support anti-immigrant and protectionist policies. It has been found that there is a clear pattern for liberals: they tend to become more authoritarian when they are more worried about their financial situation. Liberals become more likely to favor ending birthright citizenship, isolationist foreign policies, building a wall on the border with Mexico, new limits on imports and less likely to favor allowing refugees, free trade, and the increase of immigration level. No consistent pattern has been found for conservatives, as they are more likely to support these policies in the first place.
