Abstract: There are over 50 million students enrolled in K-12 schools in the United States alone, and over 50% of Americans from ages 6-17 play one or more sports (Black et al., 2022; NCES, 2023). Moreover, greater than 90% of children under 18 in the U.S. live in a household with one or two parental figures, and around 98% of adolescents – particularly teenagers – have at least one close friend (Act for Youth, 2024; Anderson, 2018). The present study focuses on how social relationships with parents and peers can impact an adolescent’s academic and athletic involvement, as well as whether there is a consistent relationship between parental involvement in their child’s pursuits and the level of adolescent academic or athletic motivation. Findings mostly support existing literature by drawing associations between adolescent athletic and academic engagement and the quality of social relationships and parental involvement, and serve as groundwork for future studies to expand upon these results.
